本文以赵稀方的论文“《红与黑》事件回顾——中国当代翻译文学史话之二”为契机，对1995年由《文汇读书周报》开展的有关《红与黑》翻译的读者调查事件在中国翻译理论史上的地位进行了探讨，力图还原其在中国及国际翻译学史中的坐标位置。本文认为，这一事件的表面观念虽然在当时落后于国际译学，但这一落后并不仅仅是这一事件本身的落后，而是当时中国翻译学研究的整体水平的落后，相比较当时的中国翻译研究的水平而言，这一调查背后的理论观念以及建立在这个调查基础上的研究，在很多方面其实已经体现了当时国际译学的前沿水平，因此，在中国当代翻译理论史上，这是个具有重大意义的事件。

Taking advantage of Zhao Xifang’s article “A Review of Dispute over Chinese Translations of Stendhal’s le Rouge et le Noir,” this paper also tries to reevaluate the historical significance of this “dispute,” which was started by Wenhui Book Review in 1995, and site its position in the history of Chinese and international Translation Studies. It is argued that, although the surface value of this debate at issue is regarded as outdated against the background of the then international Translation Studies, it actually reflects the overall level of Chinese Translation Studies at that time, and furthermore, the underlying theoretical awareness of the design of the debate and the research based on it are quite advanced at home and even come close to the leading edge of the international Translation Studies. In terms of the history of Chinese contemporary Translation Studies, therefore, this debate and the related research are a significant event which should invite more attention.
