ean Boase-Beier ’s new book A Critical Introduction to Translation Studies was one of the critical introductions to linguistics published in 2011 by the Continuum ,an international academic press. This book review highlights its critical introduc- tion to “the definition of translation”,“text type and translation”, “the cognitive perspective of translation study”, “the develop- ment of equivalence theory ”, “faithfulness and translation”, “translation as a conceptual blend”, “translation theory and prac- tice ”and so on. The book is based on the view that the study of literary translation is the basis for the study of all types of trans- lation with sound arguments. It gives critical comments on translation studies rather than by simple quotation. The author of the book explains lucidly complicated translation theories with many examples in each chapter. Applying the latest development of cognitive poetics and linguistics to translation studies ,the author of the book has set a good example in applying multi-disciplinary theories to translation study. Therefore this book review concludes that the book has broadened the horizons of translation study with a new perspective. Besides it has set a good example in compiling a textbook for translation study in a lucid and critical way.
