This is a transcript of an extensive dialogue on current translation criticisms in China between Professor Liu Yunhong and leading translation studies scholar Professor Xu Jun. Among their major arguments are: 1) contemporary China is acutely lacking in translation criticism; 2) the agency of translation critics is not adequately recognized, nor is the historicizing principle duly observed, both to the detriment of translation criticism; and 3) the academic legitimacy of translation criticism resides in bringing translation theories and practices into productive interplay, furthering the development of translation theories, and effectively intervening in translation practices.
