Despite the tremendous achievements made in the academic studies by the Foreign Language teaching and research circles, there are still outstanding problems that need to be addressed in order for the relevant disciplines to survive and develop. One of the problems is that the field still lacks a strategic development blueprint, either official or unofficial, for what foreign languages to be selected and taught in different parts and different schools in the country, what level of proficiency students of foreign languages are expected to meet, what teaching theories and methods should be adopted or developed. Few studies touch on what role foreign languages should play in the nation's“going out”policy implementation processes. The author holds that foreign language teaching and research academia should seriously consider how academic research in the related fields should help draw plans regarding the nation's foreign language planning, education, the introduction and promotion of Chinese cultures in other parts of the world and conduct rigorous basic research in relevant areas.
