Chinese plays in the English language, as well as traditional Chinese drama, have played a significant role in disseminating Chinese culture across the world. Since the beginning of last century, generations of theatrical artists in Hawaii, Chinese and non-Chinese, have produced over a dozen of Chinese plays, among which “The Yellow Jacket”was the most influential and popular, and lasted the longest. The productions of this play aroused a keen interest in Chinese culture among non-Chinese in Hawaii, and contributed a great deal to the cultural identification of the Hawaiian Chinese, promoting traditional Chinese culture and the enrichment of the pluralistic Hawaiian culture.
