The research on metaphor and discourse promotes the mutual development in each field. While gaining empirical support from discourse, metaphors find their way on becoming a dynamic driving force in the development of discourse. Accordingly, the discourse activated by metaphors becomes dynamic space, the meaning of which can be construed. From the proposition we follow that discourse space is a cognitive map, which can be mapped by metaphors from different angles of specificity, prominence, perspective and dynamicity. Metaphoric mapping provides tools for conceiving of the situations in the discourse space, which also endows the discourse space with meaning. To testify this hypothesis, this paper takes Virginia Woolf's essay“Professions for Women”as a case and makes a detailed analysis of how metaphoric mapping works, hoping that the research may facilitate the research on metaphor application and the integration of Cognitive Grammar in discourse analysis.
