摘要

本文以西部某重点大学大一新生和大学英语教师为研究对象,通过问卷调查、英语水平测试和访谈三种方式,揭示现阶段大学通用英语存续的必要性。结果表明,绝大部分学生被试自我认知的英语水平未达到基本的交际要求,其实际英语水平低于四级,不具备基本的交际能力;教师被试均认为学生整体英语水平低,通用英语课程不可取缔。因此,至少在西部,大学有必要开设通用英语课程来满足学生的学习需求,培养其语言技能和人文素养。

Abstract

 Taking freshmen and English teachers from a major university in West China as subjects, this study employs the three research methods of questionnaire-based survey, English proficiency test and interview to investigate the necessity of the existence of English for General Purpose (EGP) course in China’s universities. The results show that the vast majority of the student subjects’ perceived English proficiency is below the basic requirement for communication, that their actual English proficiency is below CET-4 level, indicating their lack of basic English communicative competence, and that all the teacher subjects perceive students’ overall English proficiency as low to the extent that EGP course cannot be canceled at present. Therefore, it is safe to say that, at least in the universities in West China, it is necessary to offer the EGP course to meet students’ needs and develop their language abilities and humanistic qualities.
