In the field of foreign language and literature studies, there exist several pairs of "separation" or "isolation" which are: language as an instrument for communication and its humanistic nature; language form and content; language and literature; Chinese and English; teaching and research; theory and practice; foreign language journals and academic research. On analyzing the above "separations", the authors raise that merging should be done in these aspects in order to construct a first rate discipline of foreign language and literature studies.
