许国璋是学界公认的语言学家､英语教育家,但他本人更认同自己是个语言哲学家。本文首先概述许国璋语言学的指导思想—— “理”论与“通”论,接下来从“理”､“通”､“哲”三个视角深入分析许国璋的 语言研究思路,从中理出其语言哲学思想;最后阐释许国璋语言哲学与当代西方语言哲学及中国传统语言哲 学的关系。结论包括:许国璋的语言哲学不同于当代西方语言哲学,可归于科学哲学或学科哲学范畴;许国璋在个别文章中体现出纯哲学思辨天分;许国璋语言哲学的三个特点“理”､“通”､“哲”志存高远､磅礴大气, 深得中国传统哲人的气质和精髓。

Professor Xu Guozhang, though publicly esteemed as a linguist and an English-teaching expert, quite often regarded himself as a philosopher of language. This paper first examines Xu’s guiding principles of linguistic research, i. e., Li (logic) and Tong (penetration) , based on which we then make a detailed analysis of Xu’s Philosophy of linguistics(PL)from an additional Zhe (dialectic)perspective. Lastly, we draw a contrast between Xu’s PL respectively with western philosophy of language as well as traditional Chinese philosophy of language. We conclude that (1) Xu’s PL, differing from western philosophy of language, can be justifiably classified under the scope of philosophy of science; （2）Xu has shown his speculative talent for pure philosophy in a couple of his works; （3）Xu‘s PL, characterized by three features, i. e., Li, Tong, Zhe, is quite ambitious and grand, and embodies the qualia and essence of traditional Chinese philosophy of language.
