Abstract

The debate and investigation about Chinese translations of The Red and Black 15 or 16 years ago is a significant event in contemporary Chinese translation history. Though the content discussed is not undisputable if studied at present, the significance, if reflected rationally from the angle of contemporary Chinese translation history, consists in the event itself and the edification brought to us. The debate placed translation in the limelight of public at that time, the investigations and collection of readers’ feedback reached a desired large number, and the event itself urged Chinese translation circle to ponder over the lagging behind of Chinese translation ideas and their reasons at root. Today, it makes us realize that if we want to solve translation problems, upgrade translation research level and narrow down the academic gap between Chinese and Western translation researchers, we must establish a scrupulous translation theorist team, build up Chinese translation circle’s theoretical awareness as soon as possible and carry out disciplinary construction in translation studies effectively.
