Abstract

This paper deals with utterance understanding from a culture-driven socio-pragmatic perspective. By culture-driven perspective, the author means that certain situated utterances functioning in socializing interactions are at a deeper level driven by a particular system of culture. The discussion mainly falls into three sections: the first part deals with the three types of utterance conditions of satisfaction required for socializing acts, that of cultural rationality, appropriateness and effectiveness; the second part deals with the micro-level analysis of how a particular culture can drive or facilitate an utterance as a specific situated socializing act; and the third part explores how a mode of culture-driven acts can be constructed at the community level, which is a macro-process. The author concludes that socializing acts are not solely situated forms of intentional interaction, but culturally conditioned acts with certain significant deeper-level cultural messages or mission, and it is interpersonal socializing that presents possibilities for a particular culture to realize its functions and values in social reality construction and interpretation, which definitely forms a sound foundation for developing any plausible social pragmatics.
