Abstract

Recycling and replacement are two commonly used strategies in conversational repair in English. This paper investigates the utilization patterns of the two above-mentioned strategies based on College Learners’ Spoken English Corpus. A comparison is also made between Chinese university students and native speakers in their utilizations of the destinations of recycling and the replaced items. The research has found a high frequency of recycling and anticipatory retracing in terms of replacement used by Chinese university students. The result also demonstrates some striking differences between Chinese university students and native speakers in their use of the destinations of recycling as well as the replaced items. The results are explained with reference to the morpho-syntactic patterns of Chinese and English.
