Based on the Martins’ appraisal framework and corpus analysis on 35 academic research papers, the present study explores the evaluative mechanisms of APPRECIATION systems as well as their semantic manifestations in the scientific discourse. The discussion clarifies the attitudinal information conveyed in each component system and illustrates their unique features in the realization of evaluation. The study reveals that the APPRECIATION is generally construed in terms of the QUALITY and VALUATION associating with the products of science, and as the other component systems, they display the same concentrations in the Introduction and Conclusion of scientific texts. The appraisal is usually inscribed or evoked through the lexical selections in relation to formulations highlighted or valued in the context of scientific research, with some variations in style and pattern.
