Abstract

The expletive-there construction is not a homogeneous group of linguistic phenomena. Inside verbals show the Definite- ness Effect ,whereas outside verbals lack such an effect. Besides ,the judgment concerning the Definiteness Effect tends to be fussy . The analysis which assumes that inside verbals involves a complex DP formed by the expletive there and the associate ,and that outside verbals involve a complex DP formed by the expletive there and a locative PP ,explains the Definiteness Effect in terms of the [Ind]feature of the expletive ,attributes the lack of such an effect to the fact that there is not related to the associate in outside verbals ,and accounts for the fussiness in judgment with the possibility of two types of Multiple Agree in outside ver- bals ,and the possibility that some verbs may have dual nature.
