Abstract

he paper examines the recasting of the image of Donna ,the heroine of the musical Mamma Mia ! ,in its Chinese translation from the perspective of acculturation in theatrical translation ,and argues that acculturation in translation has accommo- dated the image of the protagonist to the aesthetic expectation of the target audience ,improved her acceptability in the Chinese culture and shortened the distance between her and the Chinese audience. The potential cultural conflict between the western her- oine and the Chinese audience has therefore been eased ,which has contributed to the successful staging and viewing of the Chi- nese language production of the musical.
