Abstract

This paper is a study on Chinese translations of the titles of J. M. Coetzee’s works. The method adopted is a comparative analysis of the translated titles of the Mainland Chinese version, the Taiwanese version (if available) and the German version (if available) of the respective works. The analysis is based on the principle that the spiritual unity between the content of the work and its title shall be kept intact in the translating process. The conclusion is that the problems with the Mainland Chinese versions’ title translations are that the translators lack deep understanding of the essence of the original works and that they tend to belittle the importance of the translation of the title.
