Survey on the “Going Global”of Chinese Culture from the Perspective of Japanese Publications on China

Abstract

The exchange and communication of culture are realized in diverse forms,among which the domestic publishers' publication of books on another country is of great importance. As a publishing and reading magnate known to the rest of the world,Japan publishes certain amount of books on China every year. This article investigates,by sampling method,the books on China published by the major suppliers of four stores of Toho Shoten between 2010 and 2012,and deduces by means of statistics the overall situation of books on China published by all suppliers of Toho Shoten. The results and data acquired in the present study are employed to get a bird's-eye view of the landscape of books on China promoted in Japan,to investigate the aspects and extent of concern for China among Japanese publishing industry and its people, as well as to analyze the reasons why China is under such concern.
