Abstract

The teachers' beliefs among foreign language teachers in Chinese universities are classified by means of questionnaires and interviews in this paper, and its relationship with teaching practice has been analyzed as well. The results indicate: 1) The teachers' beliefs among foreign language teachers in Chinese universities can be divided into five types, which vary significantly in their strength, and these five types of teachers' beliefs could be put in such an order as, teachers' role, foreign language teaching and assessment, course design, foreign language learning, and the approach to language. 2) It is very difficult for most beliefs of foreign language teaching and assessment to be put into teaching practice, and it is extremely difficult for Chinese teachers to fulfill the belief that“a teacher should not assess all the students with the same criteria” .
