A social constructivist approach to the cultivation of professionalized translator competence

Abstract

This research approaches the cultivation of translator competence from the perspective of social constructivism. By clarifying the definition of translator competence from translation competence, this research proposes an optimal model for training translator competence in professional degree students. It points out that professional translators should not only acquire the translation skills, but also the abilities to adapt to the working environment. Moreover the translation competence and the onjob competence should be constructed by the students themselves through attending systematically the translation courses and participating in different translation projects. It can therefore be concluded that the cultivation of professional translators should be in accordance with the demand of the translation market, fulfilling the requirement of the strategic development of our Chinese Culture“Going Global” .
