Abstract

The Interpretive Theory ( la théorie interprétative de la traduction, formerly la théorie du sens) was established as an interpreting theory in the late 1960s and proposed later as a theory of translation in general. Its“deverbalization”hypothesis has been frequently employed as an analyzing tool in interpreting studies in China, yet few empirical studies have been conducted to test its application to Chinese-English interpretation as compared with written translation. Based on Chinese-English Conference Interpreting Corpus 3. 0, the present study attempts to investigate the interpretiveness of Chinese-English press conference interpreting through observing the translation of the Chinese modal verb“ying gai” . Results suggest that ChineseEnglish Press Conference Interpreting shows a significantly stronger tendency for“interpretive translation”than Chinese-English government report translation. This is possibly explained by their differences in time pressure, context of communication, and source-text redundancy.
