Abstract

A national leader's intercultural speech is an important kind of governmental discourse with great political significance. This study is an analysis of the discourse strategies adopted by Chairman Xi Jinping in his international speeches and their English translation approaches in the book Xi Jinping: the Governor. The analysis also incorporates comments on Xi's speeches reported in the international media to determine the effect of communication. It is found that Xi has successfully used the people-first strategies such as“touching stories” , “ingenious quotation” , “vivid metaphors”and“common sayings” , which are highly appreciated by the target audience. These discourse feathers are well represented in the English version of the book through literal translation, transmigration and back translation. Enlightenment can be drawn from both the discourse strategies and their translation for more effective international communication of Chinese political discourse in the future.
