Abstract

English for Academic Purposes ( EAP) has become a new course design concept in the transitional period of College English teaching recently. Based on the positive teaching effect of the pilot teaching of Research Project, as one of the EAP courses, for the new sophomores of non-English majors in short term in Southeast University since 2008, such problems of the teaching as limited course hours, deficient cooperative learning, students' weak academic competence in thinking, expressing and writing, and teachers' traditional teaching mode have been exposed and discussed. And the suggested countermeasures like: increase course hours or lengthen course circle, cultivate group culture to strengthen cooperative learning, offer the continuous EAP courses in freshman and sophomore years and shift the teachers' role in the courses, have been fully presented, aiming to enhance the effective teaching of Research Project and provide some referential experience for the improvement and promotion of EAP in the foundation phase of higher education.
