Abstract

Studies of expertise in teaching could shed important light on foreign language teacher education by clarifying its characteristics and structure, identifying the learning mechanisms that mediate the development of such expertise, and also synthesizing practical strategies to promote its development. This paper traces the evolution of conceptions of expertise in teaching from multiple perspectives, discusses the relevant research methods, and concludes with implications for foreign language teacher education research and practice.
