By taking The Classic of Mountains and Seas as a case, this paper intends to make an analysis of Anne Birrell’s thinking about translation by taking both the translated text and its paratexts into account through the discussion of the translator’s attitude, the selection of the source text, and the translation techniques. The research finds that Birrell adopts annotated thick translation, and tries to represent the original text by translating the name of almost each god, using the Anglo-Saxon words instead of the Latin, adopting the same translation for the same character, together with plenty paratexts including introduction, notes, illustrated pictures, thus presenting the target reader with pictures of the exotic experience of the ancient Chinese.
