Abstract

As hedging is one of the significant indicators of intercultural rhetoric, we compared and analyzed, from the perspective of intercultural rhetoric, the hedges in the conclusion section of academic articles written in English by native English and Chinese academic writers, using corpus linguistics method. The findings are that, overall, Chinese authors and their Anglo-American counterparts showed no significant difference in the use frequency of most of hedges; both groups of writers exhibited the similar tendency in the strategy of choosing hedge types; certain categories of hedges applied by the two groups of writers demonstrated some differences in linguistic realizations. This study has some practical implications for Chinese authors’ academic writing and publication in English.
