It bears enormous significance of foreign affairs promotion and reality that Xinhua news agency issues the Chinese and English special versions of China new top leaders. This research treats the English image and text version corpus of Xi Jinping as the exploration subject, and applies the framework of visual metaphor to annotate the cognitive metaphoric meaning of the corpus’ images, then utilizes the semantic tagging system to decode the semantic metaphoric meaning constructed by the corpus’ text, meanwhile explore the relation between image and text of the corpus on the basis of the intersemiotic semantic model and meaning framework. The research has found that: first, the corpus’ image constructs plenty of explicit features, and the corpus’ text reveals more implicit properties; second, the metaphoric meanings of image and text have both similarity and variety; third, the image and text of the corpus construct the “image subordinate to text” and “text enhances image” relations. The research is believed to offer new probe angle on how to efficiently construct national leaders’ positive images and promote as well as introduce national potential “soft powers” in the foreign affairs promotion context.
