Abstract

In his work L’Âge de la traduction, the French translation theorist Antoine Berman subjects Benjamin’s The Task of the Translator to a textual anatomy from the distinctive “commentary” perspective and clarifies in great detail several places of ambiguity and obscurity identified in the text. Following the line of inquiry offered by L’Âge de la traduction this paper undertakes a reexamination both of Benjamin’s “pure language” – a concept highly susceptible to decontextualized misinterpretations by scholars of later generations – and of the idea “literality” closely related to “pure language”. In doing so, I wish to pinpoint the theoretical connotations of the two as Benjamin initially implies.
