Abstract

Based on Habermas' theory of communicative action, this study discusses the reasons and motives of Canadian university teachers’ accepting international academic visitors, some challenging issues in their cooperation, gains from their cooperation and suggestions for future cooperation. The authors drew the following conclusion: the Canadian university teachers accepted international academic visitors to expand their realm of academic exchange. But in the process of exchange, there appeared barriers of language, culture and some other problems on the part of visitors. Through cooperation, the Canadian university teachers affirmed the positive effects brought by the visitors and they put forward the suggestion that they take a serious consideration of the application of academic visitors. This is of guiding significance for reference to Chinese universities to accept academic visitors and to visitors for an application.
