Abstract

From the integrated and layered perspectives of pragmatic awareness, this study is carried out to examine the characteristics and developmental patterns of pragmatic awareness among Chinese English learners. The results show that: 1) The degree of integrated pragmatic awareness and the levels of the three layers (perception, noticing and understanding) are all significantly different in different learning stages, and the higher learning stage the stronger pragmatic awareness. 2) The degree of integrated pragmatic awareness and the levels of the three layers (perception, noticing and understanding) are all significantly different in different proficiencies, and the higher language proficiency the higher pragmatic awareness. 3) The degree of integrated pragmatic awareness and the levels of the three layers (perception, noticing and understanding) are not significantly different between male and female learners, but the dgree of integrated pragmatic awareness and the levels of the three layers (perception, noticing and understanding) of female learners are always higher than those of male learners.
