Abstract

Professor Pan Wenguo, a linguist, is conversant with linguistics both ancient and modern, and both Chinese and foreign. He contributes a lot in the fields of the contrastive study of Chinese and English, the sinogram-based theory of Chinese, theory of Chinese rhyme tables, history of Chinese word formation, western translation theory, international communication of languages and cultures, language teaching, etc. This paper is an interview with Professor Pan Wenguo, who, based on his own thought on language teaching, proposes Contrastive Approach to Foreign Language Teaching, discusses its language view, basis and meaning as well as the relevant Chinese educational tradition, and integrates the propositions of the traditional Grammar Translation Method with the ones of the Conscious-comparative Method. The approach proposed in this paper is the one that focuses on the interference of mother tongue and attaches importance to "learning". The paper holds that Contrastive Approach to Foreign Language Teaching is rooted in the traditional Chinese educational thought, embodies language rules and students' cognitive rules, and conforms to the reality of foreign language teaching in most parts of China. It is a foreign language teaching approach with Chinese characteristics.
