Norms and norm-taking in interpreting for Chinese government press conferences: a case study of hedges

Abstract

The issue of norms has long been an area of attention in translation studies. Based on the materials collected in Chinese government press conference interpreting and the Chinese government work report translation, this paper aims to explore the norms and norm-taking in Chinese-English interpreting and translation. Hyland’s (1996a, 1996b) model of hedges is adopted as the framework for textual analysis The results show that: firstly, both interpreters and translators give priority to the “faithfulness” norm in interpreting and translating; secondly, interpreters choose to adhere to the sociolinguistic norms of “politeness” and “accuracy” in turn in interpreting; thirdly, the roles of other norms in translating are largely unnoticeable; lastly, the regular optional shifts by interpreters also reveal the significant influence of the institutional norm - “bring interpreters’ initiative into full play”.
