Abstract

This study investigates the use of the cohesive devices in the translated English texts collected from 45 first-year students enrolled in the program of Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) in a Chinese university, and compares it with the cohesive devices used in an expert’s English version, for the purpose of revealing the cohesion problems that may exist in students’ translations. The result shows significance in the difference between the students’ and expert’s versions. A further analysis reveals that the major problems with cohesion in the students’ English translation include insufficient use of reference and overuse of repetition, insufficient use of the other lexical cohesive devices except repetition, insufficient use of possessive pronouns, improper use of conjunction, and insufficient use of ellipsis.
