Abstract

The interpretation of pragmatic meaning requires the analysis of the underlying rationality of discourse production and interpretation, as well as the inference of the communicative intention of the pragmatic subject. The paper studies the discourse of the hostess, the interested parties and the mediators in the TV reality show Golden Mediation in terms of cognitive, instrumental and evaluative rationalities, and demonstrates the embodiment of rationality in language use. The rationality of the pragmatic subject as reflected in language use is termed as pragmatic rationality. The rationality is the essential index of the pragmatic subject’s competence as it denotes the capability of the subject to provide a rationale for language use, and the normative basis for language use.
