On the view of foreign language teaching in Herder’s Journal of My Voyage in the Year 1769

Abstract

The early important writing of the 18th century German thinker Johann Gottfried Herder Journal of My Voyage in the Year 1769 presents his philosophical system comprehensively. This article examines the concept of language and education based on anthropology as his core thought and analyses his related discussion on foreign language teaching. The study has found that Herder proposes from the historicity of human beings the foreign language teaching theory based on the age of the human mind, and he suggests from the autonomy of human beings using sensibility, paying attention to reason and listening and talking in foreign language teaching. Hence his goal is to realize humanity through foreign language teaching.
