A qualitative research upon the perspective on grammar study of Chinese English majors

Abstract

This study develops a semi-structured interview upon Chinese English majors to observe their perspectives on grammar study. Based on a qualitative analysis, a theoretical model is constructed to interpret their perspective. The research reveals that learners’ perspective upon grammar study is a complete system, consisting of four interconnected factors: grammar features, grammar functions, learning methods and learning target. The perspective is closely linked to the learning experience in middle schools. The completeness of the system is damaged in college because of the change in the learning targets. Therefore, to establish a complete perspective on grammar study, proper theoretical grammar should be selected according to learners’ target, so as to offer appropriate understanding of the features and functions of grammar. In the meantime, writing probably will be suitable place for the experiments in grammar teaching.
