Abstract

Toolan made the initial attempt to study narrative progression of short stories in English with a corpus approach. The feasibility to apply the model put forward by Toolan in long web novels is explored in this paper based on a case study of the fan translation of Coiling Dragon, the representative work on “Wuxiaworld”,an American website which first ignited foreign readers’ enthusiasm for Chinese web-novels; and the English translations of another Chinese web-novel, Stellar Transformations and two classic wuxia novels written by Gu Long are taken as reference corpus respectively. The results show that the fan translation of Chinese web novels share common features on narrative progression which helps counteract the obstacles brought by the cultural “otherness” and attract the English readers. The corpus narratology approach plays a more valuable role in the study of longer works whose narrative features can be figured out and therefore advices offered for creative writing, rewriting and translation for better intercultural communication.
