Considering that few study has systematically discussed the theory and method of the multi-dimensional analysis in China, the present article comprehensively discussed the theoretical basis and methodological advantages, summarized the applications and developmental trends of the multi-dimensional studies in various linguistic fields(e. g., register variation, academic discourse variation, dialect and gender language variation, diachronic register variation, and cross-linguistic variation),and described the step-by-step procedures in conducting a multi-dimensional analysis. This systematic discussion of the multi-dimensional analysis is supposed to help advance the applications of the multi-dimensional analysis in various linguistic research fields in China.
