Abstract

The concepts of “new liberal arts” and “big foreign languages” are gradually gaining popularity. The existing relevant researches are mostly from scholars in the domains of humanities and social sciences. Discussions from the perspective of interdisciplinarity and integration of liberal arts and natural sciences can increase the breadth and depth of the knowledge production on these topics. Based on this consideration, we have consulted Professor Feng Zhiwei for his opinions on “New Liberal Arts”and “Big Foreign Languages”. Professor Feng is a well-known scholar with both liberal arts and natural sciences background. He points out that the concept of “big foreign languages” is actually triggering a “paradigm revolution”. In this context, foreign languages research needs innovation, especially methodological innovation. Scholars in the domain of foreign languages research and teaching should face the challenges, update their knowledge, highlight characteristics, and carry out interdisciplinary researches that integrate liberal arts and natural sciences.
