Status quo and trends of research on multimodal language teaching abroad: a visual analysis based on CiteSpace

Abstract

Based on CiteSpace 5.7.R1 system, this paper conducts a visual analysis of 187 research articles and their co-cited references retrieved from world authoritative journals in the field of multimodal language teaching abroad. The study analyzes the trends in multimodal language teaching via the visualization tool, obtains core issue and research front through the high impact research articles with centrality, as well as the key words cluster. The results show that the research abroad has been on the increase trends overall with fluctuation; the core issue and research front is related with strategies in SLA, language teaching theories and methods, multimodal meaning construction and multiliteracies. It suggests that we should attach importance to strategies in SLA and the rules of memory in theory; while in practice, we should attach importance to the multimodal language teaching technology capacity training for teachers and students, as well as to build a virtual learning community.
