Abstract

HU Shih supported the translation of several socialist works in the 1920s and 1930s, but unfortunately, relevant studies are very few. One of the few studies is Professor HUANG Xingtao’s “A textual research and elaboration on ‘letters to HU Shi from CHEN Duxiu and other scholars’ in Renmin University of China Museum” published in Journal of Renmin University of China in 2012, which discusses HU Shih and the translation of Das Kapital. HUANG holds that the reason why HU Shih did not support LI Ji’s translation of Das Kapital lies in their different positions, and gives three pieces of evidence. However, there are some mistakes in HUANG’s evidence. This article uses HU Shih’s diary, letters and other first-hand materials to explore the relationship between HU Shih and socialism, describe his support for the translation of socialist works, and respond to HUANG’s views, thereby revealing HU Shih’s contribution to the spread of early socialist thought in Chinese society.
