Abstract

The International and Regional Studies has been officially promoted to an important disciplinary position. For the Chinese foreign language community to engage therein, the studies mean great opportunities as well as challenges. The major challenges consist in the much more chaotic global situation and China’s urgent needs to become a problem-solving country. Together with the unprecedented challenges come unprecedented opportunities: the foreign language community is bound to play an unreplaceable role in International and Regional Studies. Then how shall we best use the opportunities to increase China’s soft power and serve the country’s international communication? I suggest that we consolidate our multi-lingual advantage, prioritize the production of advanced highly relevant professionals, and efficiently and systematically organize humanities and social science inquiries of foreign countries’ past and present and future, their politics, economy, law, and even natural sciences, i.e., their everything, everything academically or practically significant.
