Abstract

This study approaches academic discourses from a Construction Grammar perspective by proposing a new and fine-grained Move-based Academic Discourse Construction framework. The framework allows for a systematic analysis of research articles from dimensions of semantic features, pragmatic factors, syntactic constructions and lexical resources. It can also identify key linguistic features associated with distinctive moves and their communicative functions. Therefore, the proposed framework facilitates exploring discourse formal characteristics as well as discourse meanings. Based on this framework, introductions of 40 research articles in the field of computer science were analysed to represent the Move-based Introduction Discourse Construction and identify the entrenched engagement syntactic constructions in different moves. The findings of the empirical study show our proposed framework generalizes the introduction discourse pattern over considerable variations, which is instrumental in explicating the structural mechanism, move structure and evaluative language features of introduction discourses in a systemic and formalized way.
