Abstract

The Geneva Conference of 1954 was an important conference on international issues in which New China participated with the status and in the capacity of the Big Five. Based on such historical sources as photographs and video materials of the conference, this paper studies Chinese diplomatic interpreting from the perspective of visual narrative theory. The interpreting activities inside and outside the venues and the important roles played by interpreters are described from a visual perspective through the analysis of visual texts and the research into the historical background information in archival records, documentaries and memoirs, etc. It is found that visual texts, analyzed according to the nature of visual narrative and placed in the historical context, can help to restore the scenes of historical interpreting and to explore the diversified roles of interpreters in the historical process.
