Abstract

From the perspective of iconicity, this paper attempts to make a comprehensive contrast between Chinese and English verb reduplicative forms by combining quantitative and qualitative methods. It is found that total reduplications are more commonly used in Chinese while partial reduplications in English. The results show that the iconicity of Chinese verb reduplications has the tendency of metaphorical iconicity by emphasizing the mappings of the sameness between forms and meanings, highlights the cross-domain transfer and the physical property of verbs, and displays the spatial trait of its chunkiness, discreteness and reversibility, which can be defined as Chinese strong spatiality in substance in the light of its mode of thinking, while the iconicity of English verb reduplications has the tendency of imagic iconicity by underlining the mappings of the changes between sounds and meanings, manifests the original attribute and the dynamic property of verbs, and unfolds the temporal trait of its change, adhesion and development, which can be characterized as English strong temporality in nature in terms of its way of thinking.
