Abstract

The current study aims to examine the effects of task switch and inhibitory control on bilinguals’ Chinese and English speech production by investigating language switching between picture-description tasks. The results show: 1)in non-switch condition, complexity, accuracy and fluency of bilinguals’ Chinese and English speech production were all better than those in switch condition; 2)asymmetrical switch cost was obtained that in switch condition, Chinese and English bilinguals’ Chinese speech complexity, accuracy and fluency suffered more than their counterparts in English speech production; 3)An asymmetrical impact was also found that inhibitory control might exert more impact on Chinese speech production than did it on English speech production. These results demonstrate that task switch and individual inhibition ability have a significant impact on Chinese and English speech production.
