Abstract

The generic concepts of English “Article+Noun”s are generated from the internal and external spatial quantification of things. Through the analysis of the internal spatial quantification, the paper finds that the reason why the “Article+Noun” can express different generic concepts lies in its different features of the internal concepts; Through the analysis of the external spatial quantification, the paper finds, that when an “Article+Noun” is used for generic references, the things or substance it refers to is externally conceptualized as one external quantity point. Internal concepts as ANY QUANTITY POINT、THE TYPICAL QUANTITY POINT、ANY QUANTITY POINTS、THE MAXIMUM QUANTITY EXTENT are highlighted, which leads to four kinds of generic references as THE CLASS AS REPRESENTED BY ANY QUANTITY POINT, THE CLASS AS REPRESENTED BY ITS TYPICAL QUANTITY POINT, THE CLASS AS REPRESENTED BY ANY QUANTITY POINTS and THE CLASS AS REPRESENTED BY QUANTITY EXTENT.
