The present article reviews Negotiating and Contesting Identities in Linguistic Landscapes compiled by Robert Blackwood and his colleagues. The book under review deals with the linguistic landscapes in public space in a bunch of countries with a focus on the negotiating and contesting of identities, which can be seen as the latest development in the research on linguistic landscapes. The present article, on the basis of a summary of and brief comments on the book, aims to inform Chinese scholars of the advancement in linguistic landscape research and the language use in public space and to identify key issues and research approaches in this area. It calls for original research in the particular context in China so as to contribute to the research on linguistic landscapes around the globe.
