Translating poems from English into vernacular Chinese becomes more difficult as stricter aesthetic and metrical requirements are put forward on its way towards maturity. Its two problems — the lack of poetic beauty and the limitation on metrical patterns — can be solved with the inspiration from translating poems into classical Chinese language. Translating poems from English into classical Chinese relies particularly on the rules of classical poetry. Poetics of Jiangxi Poetry School represents the common attributes of classical Chinese poetry. Through discussing the principles of Poetics of Jiangxi Poetry School and the specific application in translation, this article aims to reveal the value of “common attributes” in translation studies so as to make a contribution to the construction of Chinese translatology and inspire the future translation practice as well.
